Moreover,in addition to the direct effect of pH on the removal of manganese, the ammonium presence may change the properties of MeOxafter long-term operation with ammonium addition. The specific surface area of the MeOx-coated sands and the amount of MeOxin this experiment are shown in Table 1.After 100 days of operation, the specific surface area of the MeOxcoated sand used to treat the feed water without and with ammonium addition increased by 14.48%and 6.61%,respectively,and the amount of MeOxgenerated in the systems without and with ammonium addition increased by 16.13%and 2.49%,respectively.Therefore,the presence of ammonium slowed down the increases in new MeOxgeneration and the specific surface area of the MeOx-coated sand.Increased specific surface area can provide more active sites for the removal of manganese(Huang et al.,2014).In addition, the rate of manganese oxidation is related to the amount of MeOx(Stumm,1996;Vries et al.,2016).Therefore,the manganese removal efficiency of the filter used to treat the feed water with ammonium addition was inferior to that of the filter used to treat the feed water without ammonium addition.
