1) Survival rate was analysed by Chi-square test,pre-oviposition period was analysed by Mann-Whitney U-test,total fecundity and adult dry weight were analysed by Student’s t-test.Data are mean±SE.Number of replicates is given in parenthesis.

Over 83%of the adult C.sinica survived the 25-day pollen feeding period, and the survival rates did not differ between the Bt and the corresponding non-Bt pollen treatments(χ2-test;both P>0.05)(Table 1) .Similarly, the pre-oviposition period and total fecundity were not significantly affected by ingestion of Bt maize pollen(pre-oviposition period,Cry1Ab/2Aj:U=545,P=0.163,Cry1Ac:U=572.5,P=0.141;total fecundity,Cry1Ab/2Aj:t=1.39,df=71,P=0.17;Cry1Ac:t=0.33,df=73,P=0.74).The daily fecundity was not significantly affected by feeding on Bt maize pollen(Cry1Ab/2Aj:F1,71=1.92,P=0.17;Cry1Ac:F1,73=0.11,P=0.74)(Fig.1) .The student’s t-tests revealed no statistical differences between Bt and non-Bt pollen treatments for adult dry weight(Cry1Ab/2Aj:t=0.15,df=19,P=0.88 for females and t=0.30,df=23,P=0.77 for males;Cry1Ac:t=0.49,df=22,P=0.63 for females and t=0.76,df=26,P=0.47for males)(Table 1) .
