Samples(PBES,BES control and P control)were taken from the cathodes at the end of the operation.A total of 95,774 raw sequences were generated from the 3 samples.The nonparametric richness indices of Chao and ACE showed dissimilar trends in predicting the number of operational taxonomic units(OTUs)for each sample(Fig.4a and Table 2).The Shannon diversity index provided the species richness(i.e.,the number of species present)and the distribution of each species(i.e.,the evenness of the species)among all the species in the community(Zheng et al.,2014).In this study,the PControl showed the highest diversity(Simpson=0.0768),which was greater than that of the BES Control and PBES(Simpson=0.0349 and 0.0498,respectively).This result was also verified in the ribosomal database project(RDP)classifier analysis based on OTUs,where the bacterial communities in the P Control clustered separately from the samples of the BES.The cathodic microbial communities of the P Control were more diverse than those gathered from the BES and PBES due to the existence of the cathode.
