Brewery wastewater after anaerobic treatment for methane production still contains a considerable concentration of organic carbon that has to be further reduced prior to discharge into the receiving water bodies(Table 1).Therefore,the feasibility of using wastewater containing a low concentration of VFA for PHA production by the enriched MMC was evaluated. The wastewater was fed by pulse addition(six pulses of 177 mg C/L TOC)controlled by the DO concentration.Fig.6 shows the TOC,PHA and DO concentration profiles in the accumulation reactor fed with anaerobically treated brewery wastewater. The maximum PHA storage capacity achieved was 43.7%CDW,which consisted of PHB(29.5%CDW)and a smaller amount of PHV(14.2%CDW),and the maximum PHA storage yield was 0.49 Cmol/Cmol.The propionic acid in the wastewater contributed to the PHV content of PHA(Dionisi et al.,2004).
