HAc:acetate acid;HBu:butyrate acid;HPr:propionate acid;EtOH:ethanol;TVFAs(total volatile fatty acid)=HAc+HBu+HPr+EtOH.

According to Table 2,during production of hydrogen with F/M from 2.5 to 7.5,system ORP ranged between(-395±12)m V and(-406±7)m V.With inlet p H of feed being adjusted to 7.0 prior to feeding,system p H varied between(4.54±0.09)and(4.78±0.07).The pH range would effectively block the bioactivities of methanogenic Alkalinity was kept at the level of above(0.26±0.018)g/L which could effectively buffer the pH fluctuation.The main metabolites were found to be ethanol,acetate,butyrate and a small amount of propionate(Table 2).The total VFAs concentration varied in the range of(1.66±0.06)~(2.0±0.14)g/L.Experimental data revealed the persistence of ethanol-forming pathway with fraction of ethanol from(48.7±2.3)to(54.2±2.7)%and butyrate-forming pathway with fraction of butyrate from(21.9±6.1)to(23.8±7.7)%.The fermentation pathway in UASB system indicated the microenvironment was favorable for hydrogen production corresponding to high hydrogen production rate.However,at F/M of 10,the system has a trend of paralysis due to the pH reduction and VFAs accumulation.
