Of the 101 articles we found that analyzed bird communities in urban green areas,relevant information was found in 49 studies.These studies were published between 1976and 2015(mean=2004).Of these 49 studies,44 were conducted solely in urban parks,four in urban parks and golf courses or cemeteries,and one study was conducted only in cemeteries.A total of 17 studies(35%)were from Europe,14(29%)from South America,nine(18%)from North America,seven(14%)from Asia and two(4%)from Oceania(Fig.2).Of the 49 studies,the sampling methodology employed was classified as stringent in22(45%),intermediate in 17(35%),and lax in 10(20%)(Additional file 1:Table S1).For 46 studies,we obtained data on the area and species richness of each green area in the study(see below).
