The study population is displayed in Fig.3.Patients’characteristics,cause for initial SEMS-insertions,types of initial SEMS and reason of SEMS occlusions are displayed in Table 1.The median primary SEMS-patency of all patients was 110 days(IQR:57-223).Primary stent patency in covered self-expanding biliary metal stents(CSEMS)was 98 days(IQR:48-294)compared to 93days(IQR:55-196)in uncovered self-expanding biliary metal stents(USEMS)(P=0.522) and 158 days(IQR:62-261)in unclear SEMSdesigns. There was a significant higher rate of occlusions caused by SEMS in-growth in USEMS compared to CSEMS(41.0%vs.7.4%,P<0.001).Cholangitis was present at time of initial occlusion in a total of 66 patients(83.5%).In the remaining 13 patients(16.5%)painless jaundice was the predominant symptom.Three patients(3.8%)deceased after SEMS occlusion with consecutive cholangiosepsis 3,5 and 7 days after diagnosis.
