15 GSD samples were collected from different debris flow events that primarily occurred in different area in China.They were divided into two groups with A1~A7 and B1~B9.The former samples were used for single-structure tests and the latter for two-structure tests.Considering the scaling problems,only the solid phase of each GSD sample was considered based on the two-phase flow theory(Fei et al.1991;Shu et al.2008).The maximum grain size diameter was set at 60 mm,and 2 mm was used as the minimum diameter of the solid phase.Over the grain size range,five grain size classes were considered that comprised the intervals of 60-40 mm,40-20 mm,20-10 mm,10-5mm,and 5-2 mm(Figure 1 and Table 1).This consideration is rational because HWSSSs are primarily intended to separate coarse debris that causes harmful damage.
