a) *Tropical, temperate and boreal countries in FAO FRA statistic based on the average of latitude of forest pixel from GLC2000.We divided the average of latitude for the country falling in 50°N–90°N and 50°S–60°S as boreal region,23.5°N–50°N and

Our MTE derived forest BCD map resembles that of Saatchi et al.(2011),except in the east and south of China.Forest BCD in the east and south of China was estimated as high as150–200 Mg C ha-1in Saatchi et al.(2011),while it is estimated around 40–80 Mg C ha-1in this study.Independent inventory based studies suggested that young plantation forest with a typical BCD value of 30–60 Mg C ha-1makes up a large fraction of the forested area in east and south China(Piao et al.,2005).In addition, our results are also consistent with other published high resolution(1 km)forest biomass maps for other temperate and boreal countries or regions such as United States,Russia, and Europe(Houghton et al.,2007;Saatchi et al.,2007;Baccini et al.,2008;Blackard et al.,2008;Gallaun et al.,2010),with the exception being the southeastern United States. In the southeastern United States,we estimate that most of its forest BCD is about 125–150 Mg C ha-1,which is higher than that the value of usually<110 Mg C ha-1in Blackard et al.(2008).For some tropical grids with highly dense forests, extrapolating from the MTE based on country level average forest BCD and satellite data may underestimate their local BCD.On the other hand, for a large country with highly spatial heterogeneity in forest biomass density, like the United States, disaggregation of the FRA country estimate using MODIS may also cause more uncertainty in some locales. However, country or regional averaged uncertainty is relatively small for most countries and regions(Table 1).
