a) *FAD,First Appearance Datum;FO,First Occurrence.**In the Chinese marine and continental stages, the stage names in brackets refer to those previously used but currently abandoned because of their name duplication with some lithostratigraphic units. The

The name of Triassic derives from the Germanic Basin(von Alberti,1834)because the strata are apparently tripartite there. However, the Triassic appears to be divided into two parts in South China,i.e.the lower marine and upper continental facies, whereas the Triassic in the northern China is composed of terrestrial sediments, which is completely different from that in the Germanic Basin. In fact the Triassic stratigraphic architecture shows great variation not only in China but all over the world. Therefore, once the Subcommission on Triassic Stratigraphy(STS)was founded in1971,its first task was designated to establish an internationally unified Triassic chronostratigraphic scheme. After about two decades of extensive researches, disputes and discussions by Triassic researchers,STS formally decided to divide the Triassic System into three series and seven stages(Table 1)by voting in 1991,which has been widely accepted and used.Since then, the Triassic stratigraphers have been focusing on the definition of stage boundary and selection of the Global Stratotype Section and Point(GSSP).
