The sources of the employed population in suburban new towns are shown in Table 2.Apart from Baoshan and Minhang new towns，over 90%of the employed population in the rest seven new towns come from the local districts（counties）and less than 5%from the central city.Suburban new towns are basically in line with the objective of attracting the employed population within the local districts（counties）and promoting the local development.It is hard for these suburban new towns to attract employed population in the central city.Workers in nine new towns that are from other districts and counties（outside the central city）still account for a small proportion，for example，Minhang has the highest proportion（only 8.1%），Chengqiao and Jinshan have only 0.2%and 1.0%respectively，and the remaining six new towns have similar proportions.This shows the weak employment relationship among suburban new towns.
