As shown in Fig.3a,b,the Mo 3d XPS spectra of Mo2C were deconvoluted into six peaks,corresponding to Mo2+,Mo4+and Mo6+species.As reported in previous articles,Mo2+is assigned to molybdenum carbides and serves as active sites for HER 20.Mo4+and Mo6+can be assigned to molybdenum oxides(MoO2 and Mo O3)possibly from the surface oxidation of Mo species,as observed in previous reports 21.The surface MoO2and MoO3 can be removed after activation 22.Table 1 displays the peak position and percentage of Mo at different valence state in Mo2C,it can be seen that the percentage of molybdenum oxides in the product increases after salt sealing,which can be attributed to the generation of a large number of pores during the process of salt sealing.The generation of pores will enlarge the contact area with oxygen,which leads to the higher percentage of molybdenum oxides on the surface.
