Currently，the geographical distributions and morphological descriptions of all Diospyros known to occur in China have been proposed by Zuo et al.（1984），Lee et al.（1996）and Wang（2008）.Based on a resources investigation from 1954 to 1964 and herbarium specimen identification in 1978，Zuo et al.（1984）recognized Diospyros 53 species，four varieties，and one form as occurring in China.Later，Lee et al.（1996）described 60 species and four varieties in Flora of China.In 2008，Wang recorded 60 Diospyros species in the related section of Chinese Crops and Their Wild Related Species.In total，73 scientific names have been published for Chinese Diospyros，including 67 specific names，five varieties，and one form（Table 1）.Among these names，the above three papers accepted 49 specific names in common.The controversial scientific names could be grouped and roughly divided based on four types of situations:（1）a name was published later than an earlier report；（2）synonyms were used by different researchers；（3）researchers disagreed on the taxonomic status of some infraspecific taxa；and（4）some species may have been extirpated from China or have become extinct.
