In this work，the ferrofluid was bought from the Ferrotec company，and its parameters are shown in Table 1.The schematic of the home-built experimental setup is shown in Fig.1:for one set of the experiments，an appropriate amount of ferrofluid was injected into a transparent container until its thickness was 4 mm.The magnetic field was then applied from 0 to 32 mT in an instant manner（it took about 2 secs）and a slow manner（equably，and it took about 10 min），respectively.The ferrofluid layer’s splitting was recorded by a CCD camera.For another set of the experiments，the ferrofluid layer with a thickness of 1，2 and 4 mm was respectively placed in a vertical magnetic field，which was increased up to 32 mT in an instant manner.
