The median grain size of the sediment was characterized by a median diameter(D50)of 55±1μm(Table 1).The OM content equaled 21%±1%.The high hydrogen index(322±10 mg HC per g of TOC)and the 1/TOC ratio of 0.13±0.01 indicated that the OM was mainly of terrestrial origin(Copard et al.,2006).The pHwaterand pHKClwere low,at 5.7±0.2 and 4.8±0.2,respectively.The sediment was rich in P(0.077±0.003 mmol/g DW),Fe(0.77±0.07 mmol/g DW),and Al(2.34±0.11 mmol/g DW),as compared to Ca(0.102±0.007 mmol/g DW)and Mn(0.013±0.001 mmol/g DW).The XRD data(Fig.3)revealed that the sediment composition was dominated by quartz, feldspar, clay minerals(kaolinite, chlorite)and mica. The XRD patterns were obtained for samples at the beginning of the experiment and at the end of each stage. No P-bearing mineral phases were detected in the sediment, probably as a result of its relatively low content in relation to XRD sensitivity or to its non-crystalline structure.
