Both the Fe-17Mn and Fe-17Mn-3Al(wt%,so as the follows)steels were prepared in a high-frequency air induction furnace.According to the stoichiometric calculations, initially required amounts of mild steel and cast iron were heated to 1580°C for 15 min,and then high-purity Mn and Al were added. In the air induction furnace,to minimize the oxidation of the melt, the furnace top was covered with a ceramic block with a hole through its center, through which a stirrer was inserted into the melt. The melt was continuously stirred for 10 min to avoid the segregation of Al.The molten material was then poured into a preheated metallic mold(200°C);the pouring temperature was 1580°C.Table 1 shows the compositions of the Fe-17Mn and Fe-17Mn-3Al steels. The weight of the as-cast(AC)ingot was 25 kg,and its dimensions were 457.2 mm×152.4 mm×101.6 mm.
