In the simulation experiments,10.0 mL of acetaldehyde,4.0 m L of benzaldehyde and 4.0 mL of ethyl benzoate were added to a 282.0 mL water solution and aerosolized using a humidifier. In the presence of O3and free radicals, these organic vapors are oxidized, react in the gas phase, and then return to the particulate phase. As shown in Table 7,during the initial stage of the reaction, the PNC(0.2–10.0μm)decreased over time and then gradually increased until the highest value emerged. From then on,the PNC gradually decreased and approached the background level;these findings are consistent with our expectations.Due to the different volatility, the first peak appeared earlier than that of SO2,and so the highest peak value also emerged earlier.Free radicals play a critical role in the formation of organic particles because of their strong oxidizing ability.
