从结构上看，我们可以根据谓语的不同（主谓结构或系表结构）和外置从句类型的不同（that-从句1*或to-不定式2**）将主语it外置结构分为六大类，依次是V+that CL（如It appears that，It is shown that），V+to inf（如It tended to，It is reported to），ADJ+that CL（如It is possible that），ADJ+to inf（如It is necessary to），N+that CL（如It is the case that），N+to inf（如It is the responsibility to）。表1为各结构子类的统计信息。
