We next check the possible reasons for the failure of the QLS method in improving the summer rainfall anomalies in 1998.As summarized in Table 1,we find that the observed summer rainfall pattern for 1998 is dominated by Mode 2,Mode 4,and Mode 5,as shown in Figure 2.PC2,PC4,and PC5 from observation are equal to 1.74,-0.73,and 1.28 respectively,so the observed rainfall pattern is mainly a combination of positive Mode 2 and Mode 5,and negative Mode4.They provide the main features of the 1998 summer rainfall anomalies(Figure 1 (d)) ,i.e.the positive anomaly in the Huaihe River Basin,along the Yangtze River,and in southwest China;and negative anomalies in the area around the Yangtze River delta and the southeast coast.
