Basically,this measurement system consists of a supporting structure,metal bars,a steel anvil,a signal amplifier and a data acquisition system controlled by a computer,the detail can be found in our previous research[19].In order to record the weak signal of the accelerometer,an amplifier is used.The piezoresistive accelerometer with four resistors in a Wheatstone bridge powered by 3.3 V excitation was connected with the amplifier.Lowpass filters with the cut-off frequency of 30 kHz were used in the signal channel to filter out highfrequency components produced in the impact process.In the measurement,all data were recorded at a sampling rate of 1.25 MHz on a data acquisition system controlled by a computer.In a series of experiments,a stainless steel bar and an Al alloy bar(7009A,abbreviated as Al alloy bar)are used,respectively.The dimensions and properties of the bars are listed in Table 1.The employed accelerometer is a single axis piezoresistive accelerometer with a full-scale of 50 000g.The accelerometer is small enough for the intimate contact with the end of the bar and fixed on it.The cantilever of the accelerometer has a length L of500μm,a thickness dof 50μm,and a width wof15μm.As configured in this experiment,the sensitivity for the accelerometer is measured by the free-drop-bar method and verified by the B&K9525 shocker.Care was taken to ensure good alignment in mounting the device on the bar.The measurement system is shown in Fig.2,the three kinds of mounting methods are shown in Fig.3,and the actual end shape of the bar is shown in Fig.4.In the transverse response measurement,if the sensitive Y-axis is mounted parallel to the axis direction of the bar,namely,the XZplane is vertical to the axis direction of the bar,then the output in the sensitive direction is recorded.If the device is turned 90°,the output in non-sensitive Xdirection is measured.When the device(XY plane)is directly mounted on the top surface of the bar,the output in non-sensitive Z direction is measured.In all these measurements,the bar will drop from different heights of 5 cm,10 cm,15 cm,20 cm,25 cm,30 cm,35 cm and40 cm.The output voltage of the main wave produced in the impact process in the respective nonsensitive axis and sensitive axis can be respectively recorded and used as an evaluation of the transverse response.
