The bearing capacity of butt w elds is mainly related to parameters such as groove form,calculation length lwof the w eld,and the effective thickness heof the w eld.AISC 360 and GB 50017 stipulate that the effective thickness of full penetration butt w elds should be the thickness t1of the thinner plate of the tw o connecting plates,and the effective thickness heof partial penetration butt w elds is related to the groove form.GB 50017 specifies that heis generally set as the groove depth s,and for V-grooves w ith an angle of about 45°,he=s-3 mm.M oreover,AISC 360 limits the minimum effective thickness for partial penetration butt w elds(Table 1).
