The Guanzhong Plain is in the centre of Shaanxi Province,China with an altitude of approximately 500 m.This location has a warm-temperate continental monsoon climate with a mean annual precipitation of approximately 550–600 mm,of which approximately 60–70%occurs in summer and autumn(June to September). The tested soil is a silty clay loam from a loess material, with a mean soil pH value that is generally greater than 8.0 and 8%calcium carbonate(Guo et al.1992).Table 1 presents the basic chemical properties of the investigated soils at 120 experimental sites. The major cropping system of the region is winter wheat rotated with summer maize annually. The growing season for winter wheat is approximately 8 mon, that is,from October to June of the next year;for summer, maize is approximately 4 mon, that is,from early June to late September. Thus, maize season experiences high temperature(seasonal mean,23.8°C)and high rainfall(seasonal mean,417 mm)relative to the wheat season(9°C and 197 mm,respectively).Wheat is flood irrigated once or twice with approximately 100 mm of water on each occasion, when necessary, and on maize one to three times during its growing season.
