《Property and Degradation Characteristics of Concrete Prepared with Aggregate Contained Montmorillonite》
Carbonization is one of the important causes of corrosion in concrete.Under normal circumstances, carbon dioxide, upon reaching the surface of concrete, reduces the alkalinity inside concrete and results in accelerated corrosion of concrete structure[19].In order to assess the carbonation resistance of concrete, carbonization depths of all concretes were assessed as shown in Table 5.It can be seen from Table 5 that the control is provided with a carbonization depth 12.1 mm.However, the carbonization depths of concretes with montmorillonite in the aggregate present the values of 13.4,15.7,and 17.2 mm,respectively.Obviously, all these values are higher than that of the control. It is well known that montmorillonite appears a layer structure and free water can be absorbed in the mixing process and an expanded volume is observed. In this testing, all concrete were dried at 60℃,and the water can be evaporated from the structure layer.New more pores have been developed in the concrete due to water evaporation. The porosity is consequently increased and the compactness of concrete became lower than that of the control. For this reason, the concretes with higher content of montmorillonite in the aggregate will provide higher porosity and lower compactness. So that they have the high value of carbonization depth.
