The field experiment was conducted in 2014 at the experiment site of Hunan Rice Research Institute.Seeds were sown in five batches starting from April21st according to the meteorological data of past years.The sowing dates of different varieties varied slightly with their growth duration.The 6th batch sown around June 20th was regarded as the control.The seedlings were transplanted to the field 30 days after sown.Field management and pest control were carried out in accordance with local rice cultivation techniques.The temperature changes of rice canopy were recorded every 30 min using a temperature and humidity recorder(HOBE)with probes distributed all around the field.The temperature data(Table 1)showed that there were five successive days(July 28th to August1st)presenting a highest daytime temperature over37.9℃and a mean daily temperature above 30.5℃.Plants heading on July 28th and exposed to high temperature for five successive days during their flowering were selected for the experiment,while the plants which started heading around September 13th were chosen as the control.Three plants were selected from every variety to measure the spikelet fertility for four replications.
