This article does not deal with the background theory and applicability of widely adopted membrane lipid proxies described in the recent biogeochemical literature(Pearson and Ingalls,2013;Schouten et al.,2013;Tierney,2014).Instead,it first reviews the recent physiological studies of extremophilic archaea cultivated at two or more conditions and the membrane adaptations to environmental stresses by MS-based approaches(Section 2 and Appendix Table S1,https://link.springer.com).It then reviews the progress on the revelation of these biological factors on several isolated species of marine ammonia-oxidizing archaea(Thaumarchaea)and the implications of these findings(Section 3 and Appendix Table S1).Lastly,it presents the physiological response of archaea to their surroundings and the underlying physiology under the influences of environmental factors(Section 4),as well as the implications for new archaeal lipidomic paradigms(Section 5).
