Numerous studies have focused on the nitrification of single paddy soil or paddy soil collected from one location[10-11,25].However,little information is available about distribution and composition of AOA and AOB on a large scale in Southwest China.Therefore,in this study,we presented a comprehensive analysis of the spatial distribution and soil properties determinants of AOA and AOB communities across the Sichuan Province(area:485 000 km2).The collected seven representative paddy soils cover a wide pH range of 5.49 to 8.28,and a wide altitude range of305 m to 1 498 m(Table 1).Quantitative real-time PCR,potential activity nitrification(PNR)assay,and DGGE combined with clone library approaches were employed to investigate the nitrification activity,abundance and community structure of AOA and AOB,and identify the main environmental factors to explain the observed variations in different paddy soils.
